Point St. George Lighthouse - Code 368
By Betty Vestuto
This print features the Saint George Reef Lighthouse, a 90-foot granite tower built on a remote rock about six miles offshore. The lighthouse is considered one of the most difficult and expensive lighthouses ever constructed in the United States, with crews enduring violet seas and dangerous landings to maintain it. Its construction was completed in 1891, it was first lit in 1892 after receiving its Fresnel lens from France, it operated until 1975, and today it remains an iconic symbol of maritime endurance and engineering achievement. Betty Vestuto painted the original in 1995. The background is a nautical map of Crescent City Harbor, California.
